Odd tyre wear - what's the cause?

I've had my car since February and it has clocked up just over 32,000 miles, I assume the old tyres were the originals. Anyway - I noticed both front tyres were badly worn on the inside (almost slick), so I have replaced them.

I also had the tracking checked, thinking this was the problem. Turns out the wheels were only 1mm out, do you know why this should be, as the rest of the tyre had not reached the tread wear indicators?

Chamfered edge speed cushions. They rip the inner shoulders of car front tyres to bits.
