Is it cheaper to import?

With the Euro falling faster than a fast thing, I reviewed the 2010 EU Car price list today. It appeared then as if there was still a lot of variance in the pre-tax prices between countries, and a huge difference in the tax rates applied. A lower €/£ exchange rate suggests that buying in Ireland or the Continent may be advantageous.

I wish to buy a Seat Alhambra/VW Sharan, and wondered if you had reviewed this topic recently. As I recall, when I arranged an import of a Citroen for my Mum in 1996, one could elect to buy tax-free and pay the VAT etc. in the UK on or shortly after arrival, or alternatively buy locally and import without VAT into the UK.

Is this still valid, and if so, is it worth considering a new personal import from Portugal (where they are made)?

The Euro will need to drop quite a bit further to make this worthwhile again and, of course, companies like VAG are now so powerful that all kinds of obstacles will be placed in your path.
