Fined for damage we didn't cause to a rental car

Returning an Avis hire car to Munich airport, small scuff marks on two alloy wheels were wrongly attributed to my party. We collected the car at night from a reasonably lit carpark, where we duly checked for bodywork damage but did not see the scuffs they are attributing to us. Avis are now charging us 777 euros for the damage. It is daylight robbery!

It is, and you can't prove you were not responsible.

But if Avis has charged any other renter for the same damage you can have the company prosecuted for criminal fraud. Demand to see all relevant records.
