Forestry commissioned?

I am thinking about buying a new car to replace my ageing Subaru Forester. I am retired and living in rural Aberdeenshire, so often will only make one or two 12 mile round trips to the nearest market town. However, every two months or so, we make a near 1,000 mile round trip to Cumbria, mainly on motorways. Given this pattern of usage, do you think I should go for a petrol-powered vehicle to avoid the dreaded DPF problem, not to mention dual mass flywheel problems?

12 mile trips are okay because the engine will fully heat up in that time and DPF regeneration could start. You only have to worry if you repeatedly make very short runs from cold or you drive at excessively low revs. Subaru has recently revised the flat-four chain cam diesel engine for the Forester. Now more refined, 158g/km CO2 and 47.9mpg combined in the EC tests.
