Why do you recommend runflat tyres when they ruin the ride quality?

I usually agree with your advice, but on the subject of BMW runflats my own experience leads me to disagree. Just over a year ago I bought a 335i SE with 18-inch rims and second generation Bridgestone runflat tyres. I was assured by the dealer that these tyres would give an acceptable ride and the test drive on smooth roads suggested all was OK. However, on the country roads on which I commute daily I soon found that the ride was so choppy that the car did not inspire confidence and the ride quality was barely acceptable.

I was on the point of getting rid of the car when it failed its MoT due to a cut between the treads of a front tyre. I declined the dealer’s offer to fit a single overpriced runflat (£220) and for not much more money replaced both front tyres with Goodyear Eagle F1s (£140 each) sourced elsewhere. The change has transformed the car. It is still a very firm ride but no longer crashes over bumps. I have bought a cheap spare wheel and decided to keep the car for another year.

My advice about runflats comes from being within six inches of being killed while changing an offside rear on the hard shoulder. And that was despite having called out a police car to protect me while I did the job. On runflats I would not even have had to stop.

The ride of runflat 3s is considerably better than runflat 2s. There's a far greater difference than between runflat 1s and runflat 2s. But the main problem is 35 profile rear tyres. They are never going to ride well.
