Do you know what is causing a gear selection problem in our Nissan Micra automatic?

My partner is the second owner of an excellent condition 1996 Nissan Micra 1.3 GX Auto that has a gear selection problem, The selector has to be used with force and often it requires several attempts before engaging drive or reverse. Then all goes well with the engine performing well until the end of the journey. On restart the gear problem re-occurs. Could you please advices me what the remedy to this is? The age of the car makes it valueless and I understand that a reconditioned transmission could cost in the region of £1,800 all up.

These are symptoms of the electromagnetic clutch of the CVT failing. It won’t cost £1,800 to replace but the cost will probably still be greater than the value of the car.
