Will corrosion structurally damage my Ford Focus' alloy wheels?

I drive a 5-year-old Ford Focus 2.0TDCI saloon with Ghia spec and it is a great car. My alloy wheels are badly corroded in places. I am not bothered about the appearance of them. They are too bright anyway. My concern is whether they are weakened by this if the corrosion gets to any depth? Can I clean the spots of corrosion and spray them with a lacquer? If so ,what lacquer can you suggest and from what supplier?

It's wise to get them refurbished and preferably painted with VHT (very high temperature) paint rather than simply polished and lacquered. The alloy can become porous once the oxidation gets a hold.
