Can I recover my deposit?

I went to see a car from a dealer. I test drove it and liked it - was prepared to buy.

He asked for £300 deposit and I offered £500. I signed what I thought was a receipt for the deposit.

The next day I emailed to cancel the sale due to a high insurance quote, (more than double what I expected).

Turns out the 'receipt' says "you may lose your deposit if sale cancelled." He has offered £250 of the £500 back as a goodwill gesture. Am I a complete idiot? or should I get the whole deposit back?
