Advice on a used C4 Grand Picasso

I mainly do short school run journeys with the odd summer hoilday/weekend break during the year. We want to buy a used Grand Piccasso as it has low CO2 emmissions for a 7 seater.
1) What would be more economical - petrol or diesel?
2) How reliable is the EGS?
