Winter Tyres and speed ratings

My 102,000 mile vRS has run its entire life on 205/45/R16 tyres - these are usually rated 83W (all year round use).

I am struggling to find identically specified Winter/Snow Tyres.

A number of internet suppliers state that it is legitimate/safe to run on slower rated Winter/Snow tyres, and offer V rated tyres for £65 - £70 a cover.

Would I be safe on these (I'm sure the answer is yes)and will my insurer accept the tyres as suitable/safe?

They are low profile for 16s. Same as on my wife's customised Vios. I guess you can't go down a wheel size because 15s won't fit round the brakes. Best thing to do with your insurer is enquire if it will accept a lower speed rated winter tyre before you go out and buy them.
