Do you recommend snow chains?

I don't feel that I need winter tyres as the car has coped well with the snow we've had in the last couple of years.

The roads where I live (Kent) haven't been too bad. But there have been one or two days when I've felt that the car could do with some help. The manual says that "snow chains may be fitted only to the front wheels and only to certain tyre sizes".

I think my tyres are 205 width and 55 height. The manual also says "remove wheel centre covers and trim rings before fitting snow chains. cover caps must then be fitted over the wheel bolts".

I don't know what this means - the hub cap?

Should I buy VW snow chains or can I buy a non-specific (cheaper) make?

These are alloys so you son't have any trim rings. If you have a Touran, buy the VW bits.
