Does a plug-in hybrid work like a self-charging hybrid when the battery is empty?

I am looking at the plug-in Lexus 450h. It is my understanding that you do not need to plug in the NX 450h+ to use it. Although to get the best mpg is to do so. However, if it has not been plugged-in, when the car is running on petrol is the battery self charged to a degree?

The short answer to your question is yes, the battery will absolutely self-charge to a degree while you drive. Lexus handles its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology differently than most other manufacturers. When the plug-in battery is empty, the car reverts into a standard Lexus self-charging hybrid. So when you are driving the car normally and the plug-in EV range drops to zero, the car automatically reserves a buffer (roughly 20% of the battery) that you can't touch via plug-in EV mode. It uses this buffer to act like a traditional hybrid (like the Lexus NX 350h).
