What comfortable car do you suggest?

As we are 'getting on a bit' we are looking for a small/medium size automatic petrol car second hand that gives a really comfortable ride. We don't need sports performance. The ride is the most important thing. What would you recommend - we would be willing to spend between £14,000 to £18,000.

We'd recommend looking at a Citroen C4, the most recent version of which is easily doable on that budget. It should also feel quite familiar if you've owned the earlier C4 Cactus.
