What does the 'check VSC' warning on my dash mean?

My 61-reg Toyota Avensis petrol with 95,000 miles was bought used from Toyota at 15,000 miles and scrupulously maintained. Recently the dash has shown warnings 'check parking brake' and 'check VSC' . I can't speak for the VSC but the brake works perfectly. It started in the hot summer but now comes in and out randomly for no apparent reason.

On Toyotas VSC stands for Vehicle Stability Control, which is Toyota's name for Electronic Stability Control. This systems relies on information from the ABS sensors to function correctly, so with the parking brake warning illuminated also this would suggest there is some kind of fault with the braking system, even if it is just a matter of a sensor providing incorrect information. We would suggest having the braking system checked and potentially a diagnostic check, which may indicate which sensor is faulty.
