Are there licence changes for over 70s coming?

I understand there are some changes coming for drivers over 70. The DVLA does not seem to be forthcoming and and the internet has more rumours than facts. Can you supply details of the changes please and when they come into effect?

We have seen news reports suggesting that drivers over 70 years of age will face new measures regarding licence renewal. However, some of these news stories are based on a statement made by the Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander that she is 'open to considering' mandatory health checks. We contacted the DVLA for a response and they replied at present there are no new changes coming in from today. If changes were to be implemented they would need to be communicated widely in advance of coming into effect.
