Bought car with faulty LPG system, dealer says sold as seen.

3 weeks ago I bought an R reg Mercedes S500 from a second hand car dealer. I bought the car as it was fitted with LPG. The car stalls randomly on gas and has since I bought it. I now only run the car on petrol and my wallet is feeling the pain. I've been quoted £1000+ to fix the gas system. The dealer says the car was sold without a warranty (I was not offered a warranty) and that it was "sold as seen" so admits no liability.

Is it reasonable to expect the dealer to rectify the problem? If so how do I proceed?

Depends what you paid. If it was a trade to trade sale, sold to you to re-sell, no liability on the dealer. If it was sold to you as scrap, again no liability on the dealer. But if it was sold as a retail sale, you paid more than £2,000 for it and it was specifically sold as an LPG conversion then the dealer can either fix it for you or take it back and give you your money back. It's possible that the LPG conversion was badly done or is not suitable for this engine anyway.
