Bought a car with lots of faults

I bought a 95 MX5 from a specialist garage 6 weeks ago. I have recently sent it to my local garage to get a few things looked at and asked them to do an inspection.

They spotted a lot of faults with it, including welding required, worn brake hoses and 80% worn front brake discs.

The garage that sold it to me carried out an MOT, and my garage thinks that it should not have passed. My garage has also said that it will take a lot of work and money to put right all of the problems with it.

What can I do? Ultimately, I would like to return it and get my money back, but I didn't get the car inspected before I bought it as I relied on their reputation and the fact that they are specialists.

Depends what you paid. £2,000 or less, forget it. £3,000 + you can back the car under the Consumer Protection Regulations and Clegg v Olle Anderson. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ Any trouble, call in Trading Standards. Any further trouble, take it to the small claims track of the county court.
