Buying an economical car

I am currently running a Vauxhall Astra 1.3 CDTi. It's on an 07-plate with 6,500 on the clock.

I would like your advice on the following;
1) As my commute to work is very short I wonder if I should go for petrol or diesel?

2) I am thinking of a Ford Fiesta Focus econetic/ecoboost model, what is your opinion of these vehicles, or could you recomend anything else?

If your commute is too short to get the DPF hot enough to regenerate then I don't recommend a diesel. Better a small petrol engine.
