What are the pros and cons of electric vs plug-in hybrid?

We are looking to replace our four year old Skoda Karoq in the next year. Our preference is for a similar sized SUV. Can you advise us on the pros and cons of full electric vs hybrid electric? We have a solar panel installation which can provide some useful energy for charging the battery.

Deciding whether to go for a PHEV or full EV depends on your budget, how and where you will use the car as well as how you feel about reducing your carbon emissions.

PHEVs offer the freedom to drive long distances without worrying about recharging and you can stick to using petrol alone if you choose to do so. PHEVs also tend to be the cheaper of the two options.

On the other hand, electric cars offer zero tailpipe emissions and if you have solar panels installed then you can recharge for free - although it is unlikely you'll be able to complete recharge an EV from your solar power alone. Also electric cars offer silent running, which can help to reduce driver fatigue.

The important thing is to look at how you plan to use your new car and decide which type fits your life, and your budget, the best.
