bought VW golf '07 4 months ago - ESP/ABS light on continuously

We bought an '07-plate VW Golf from a dealer four months ago. The ESP and ABS light came on, and they've said since our warranty is out they won't fix it. They've said to contact VW dealer, but want £75 to run a diagnostic on the car first. After reading on forums that this part has a known fault that VW are aware of - where do we stand in getting them to replace it? I've heard it will cost us over £1000 for the part and labour. We only bought the car from them four months ago.

They have to fix it. They are legally obliged to fix anything that goes wrong with the car within six months of the sale or give you your money back.
