When were petrol particulate filters introduced?

I’m thinking of buying a used Toyota Corolla hybrid and I noticed it has a Gasoline Particulate Filter. I thought only diesels had this type of filters?

Petrol particulate filters were first introduced in 2016 here in the UK. They have been standard fit to cars for a long time now and work in a similar way to DPFs (capturing particulate matter and burning it off). However, unlike DPFs, petrol filters do not seem prone to clogging up when the car is used for short journeys.

One of the problems with diesel engines for low mileage users is the clogging of DPFs. Petrol particulate filters now seem to be appearing, so are they likely to have similar problems?
