Bah, Hamburg!

I wrote to you some time ago, perhaps a year ago, about my E46 BMW 320d Sport I imported from Hamburg in 2002. The car is serviced by my local BMW dealer (Woodman, Blackpool) and I retain all the service history and receipts. For the last 3 years, the car has been used for a 160-mile daily commute 3 and occasionally 4 times a week. In that previous letter, I mentioned that although I had replaced the rear tyres, the front ones, the original Michelin Sports, had done approximately 105,000 miles. You replied that someone must have replaced the fronts and that I must have forgotten about it. Not so. In 2003, I nicked the kerb protection bead on the front nearside tyre when the car had only 15,000 miles on the clock. The fronts have now just been replaced. The front nearside failed the mot due to wear on the inside edge but the tyre itself still had over 3mm across 75% of the tyre width. The front offside was given an advisory but still had 3mm of tread over its width. The tread gauge blocks on both tyres were well below the level of the tread. Both fronts finally succumbed to be replaced after 135,357 miles each, the mileage at the MoT. I also had to have the front suspension bushes replaced as part of the MoT. The car still has its original exhaust. The turbo is still going strong despite people telling me I'd need a new one anytime between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. The rear discs were replaced about 18 months ago and, the rear springs were replaced for the previous year's MoT. Oh, and I saved approximately £4,500 when I imported the car which is over and above the then UK specification.

That is extraordinary tyre life. I have never heard of anything even approaching it. Have you contacted the Guinness Book of Records?
