This email comes all the way from Tasmania, which is the little island below mainland Australia where you sent your convicts. In 2002 I bought a Holden (Vauxhall) Vectra (new) and ever since have had a love/hate relationship with that car. I didn't know your website existed until a few months ago and sadly, you are spot on with the problems concerning the car. I have literally spent thousands fixing stupid things. The whole dash had to come out to replace a bulb TWICE, airflow meter, timing belt, water pump, heater thingy, steering rattle, you name it, it has been replaced. Oh well, enough of the whinging. I am going to buy another car and I have looked at three in particular, evaluating every word from your car review ratings: Volvo C30, FIAT 500. MINI Cooper D. Sadly, I love them all but I have to pick one. Given my experience with the Vectra and its enormous maintenance bill I am a bit confused about how bad the problems could be for the MINI Cooper D. I don't know about mechanics, but oil leaks from cracked blocks, turbo not cooling down, flywheels failing all sound really bad for a 4-Star rating. Am I missing something? I love the fuel efficiency aspect of the car, in fact, that's pretty much my main criteria for buying a car. Cars are expensive here and I don't want to waste my money again. If you could let me know what you think about the above comments I would be really grateful.

The FIAT 500 auto is a Dualogic automated manual, not an automatic. But I've had a 500 1.2 Lounge manual for a year and it's been fine. Nothing gone wrong. First service just £107. And lots of useful features such as the Bluetooth phone that hooks up to my mobile as soon as I get into the car and is quick and easy to use. Ride and handling are so-so, though. There haven't been many cracked blocks on MINI Cooper Ds, but BMW MINIs have never been brilliantly reliable and trouble-free. FIAT Pandas and 500s are better in that respect. The Volvo C30 is an altogether bigger car, with engines from 1.6 to 2.5, petrol and diesel. The most fuel-efficient C30 auto will be the 2.0 diesel Powershift that should do 40mpg.
