Buy and SL

I use your website a lot as a reliable source of background information on new cars. I am thinking of changing from my current Porsche 996 Carrera to something with a little more luxury and refinement - a Mercedes SL. My budget is about £25-28k. I notice that you only give 3 stars to the earlier models and 5 stars from 2006. I would really like a 500, but the newer model is unlikely to be cheap enough soon. Am I better going for an older 500 or waiting a few months until the newer 350 is in my budget? Also, would you stick to Mercedes with its cast iron warranty or look at cheaper independent dealers?

Either go for the SL55AMG or wait for the 2006 350 and 500SL with increased power and sharper handling to fall in price. They are all sports cars. The original 2003 350SL and 500SL were boulevard cruisers, like the Ford Thunderbird. Independent dealers can have both good cars and seriously dodgy ones. But no harm in an independent import, bought cheaply before the collapse of Sterling stopped all that.
