Grim repair

I am just renewing my AA roadside Roadside/Recovery Cover and I was wondering whether the AA Breakdown Repair cover for parts and labour is worth taking out. It’s not expensive for what’s covered, about £8.50 a month, the excess is £25.00 and it covers repairs and labour up to £500.00. Looking at the policy there are no onerous exclusions, it seems pretty comprehensive. You can make more than one claim a year. Our car is a Mercedes E240 Auto Estate. It’s coming up for 10 years old and has covered 110,000 miles, but has been a great family car. We now use it mainly for longer holiday journeys, so it’s mainly for longer motorway drives and not as a daily run around – annual mileage about 6,000. We get it serviced at an excellent independent garage, repairs are reasonable etc. My main worry is if we breakdown away from home on a longer journey – hence the interest in the AA’s repair cover. I guess the alternative is a warranty cover – Warranty Direct would cost about £30.00 a month.

The sort of repairs this car is likely to need won't be covered by a £500 per repair claims limit. Obviously £500 will help towards the cost of the repairs, but it's not a get out of the garage free card. Works better for smaller cars for which repair bills are relatively less.
