Many thanks your very swift reassurances as to the legality of nearside overtaking, albeit in very specific circumstances. You have clarified the situation to my enormous relief though I have to admit, anticipating the likely absence of roadcraft in general of any 'CLOG' driver, that I would still feel very apprehensive in undertaking such a potentially risky manoeuvre, however legal.

They do tend to stay in the same place. In sensible countries, horns would be used to warn them of your presence, which is what horns are for. Unfortunately in the UK this might either shock the other driver or lead him to take umbrage because he thought you were rebuking him.
