Bridging groan

A couple of months ago I made a round trip from Stansted to Croydon and back. I passed over Tower Bridge at 01.00am on the return journey. Shortly after, I received notification that I was to be prosecuted for travelling at 28mph over the bridge; it being a 20mph limit. Not for safety reasons but for damaging the bridge. They also informed me that the cameras were hidden and the signs discreet on the instructions of ‘English Heritage’ as this was a national monument. It was implied that EH may receive some of the proceeds.
I was informed that I could go on a £90 safety course to preserve my licence. The police were unable to understand that I was travelling at a very safe speed and that if I had committed an offence it was not a safety offence. Surly a more appropriate ‘punishment’ would be to sweep the bridge. I also tried to explain that I had been made redundant and £90 was half as much again as my £60 / week dole.

Yes, the signs on Tower Bridge are well hidden. I get a similar complaint to yours every couple of years. Completely ridiculous that it should be an endorsable offence. But that's the sort of country we live in, until we can either change the administration or get out.
