My hair has gone silver, and my driving these days is mainly short journeys on local roads. However, Christmas saw me undertake several long journeys on the motorway network and there was one phenomenon that I witnessed over and over again. A reasonably busy motorway suddenly becomes much more tightly packed, giving the impression of a blockage ahead. However, when you get near the front of the queue it emerges that the problem is caused by a single vehicle moving at a rock steady 65mph in lane 2 of 3, or lane 3 of 4. The drivers seem totally oblivious to the havoc they are causing either by making other drivers consider 'undertaking' or by prompting a hazardous swerve from lane 1 to lane 3/4 and back again. There used to be stereotypes of such incidents by vehicle make / driver's sex / driver's age and so on but I can detect no such common denominator this year. What planet are these people on? What is the use of government spending millions on motorway widening when the roads are populated by rolling roadblocks such as these? Perhaps the rules on undertaking need to be revised?

They are members of CLOG (Centre Lane Owners Group) who selfishly or just plain stupidly use two or three lanes instead of the nearside lane and cause mayhem (sometimes actual crashes) behind them. Rather than prosecute these people, the message should be put out loud and clear that, if you are in the correct lane and they are not, you can pass them either side, just as long as you do not move to the nearside lane only to overtake them. In fairness, the Highways Agency often runs 'Keep Left Unless Overtaking' messages on its matrix boards when there is nothing more important to impart.
