Scrap unhappy

For the last week I've been helping my son look for another car. He drives a lot of miles, but has a wife and child to support on a minimal income, and £1,000 was his absolute maximum (unlike most of his contemporaries and our Government, he doesn't believe in living beyond his means). I'm no stranger to the banger market myself--I drive an excellent T-reg Focus. However, I was shocked to find that there just isn't anything there. After checking AutoTrader and all the Free Ads for Norfolk, the only car with a full MOT going for under £600 was an ancient Rover 400. Eventually, my garage came up with a Mark 2 Mondeo for £700, and he snapped it up. No doubt the scrappage scheme has helped the motor trade, but it sure has crucified the working poor. And it's my taxes that have paid for this evil give-away--handing out money to people who can afford new cars is obscene.

Fair point, well made. But he couldn't have landed better than in a Mk II Mondeo. As long as there's no rust in the rear sill area, it's about the best 10 - 12 year old car you can buy. Came top of the Warranty Direct stats for 10 year olds a couple of years ago. We had the good fortune to run one for 9 years. Actually there are more late 1990s scrappage survivors than people think. Scrappage only got rid of about 300,000 1995-2000 cars compared to 10,000,000 sold.
