Best £1000 car for a new driver?

What is the best car for my grandson to buy as a first car for around £1000? It must have cheap insurance, be good on fuel and reliable.

At that price, I'd buy whatever's local, in good condition with a long MoT and being sold by a genuine private seller. A Ford Fiesta with the 1.25-litre petrol engine would be a good purchase and there are loads about, so you can be picky. Alternatively, a Toyota Yaris ought to be a reliable choice.
