Attack is the best form of Defender

I have a 2004 Land Rover Defender and have seen may adverts about the merits of rechipping to improve economy and performance. What surprises me is that manufacturers do not already build the vehicle with the best performance and fuel consumption possible. I have asked Land Rover technical department for help but they just say it should not be done. Quentin Wilson in a video from one of the remapping companies extols the virtues of remapping and I would like to know the truth of the matter. Is remapping worthwhile and can it cause damage to the engine? The company I am talking to tells me that it can improve the performance and fuel consumption of my Defender and also the engine with run better and smoother and allow gear changing to take place earlier.

In answer to your “what surprises me” query, engines have moved on quite a long way from your Land Rover’s. The 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe has a new 2.2 litre diesel engine that puts out 194bhp and 422Nm torque. Yes, with some engines chipping can improve low down torque and fuel economy, but this can be at the expense of greater turbo wear and higher insurance premiums. The best people generally are www.superchips.co.uk , but there are specialists for LandRover engines. You must inform your insurer if you go ahead.
