Sizes of winter tyres

I see your recent articles in the Telegraph re winter tyres, and the advantages of them. Assuming one opts to have a set on separate wheels (ie not swapping the tyres on the same wheels), is there any advantage to having a different size? My wife's car is a Merc A200 on 195/55 R16 for summer

Might as well stick to this size. But if the car was on 17" or 18" wheels with low profile summer tyres, then 16" deeper profile winter tyres would work better.
