Some states in the USA require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to a valid licence from your own country. You can contact the motor vehicle department of each state you want to drive in for its requirements but it's easier to just get an IDP regardless. You can get one from the Post Office - it costs £5.50 and lasts for 12 months. For the USA you will need what is known as a 1949 IDP.
