Is a petrol nine-seater van a better choice than a diesel?

We are a family of six, moving to France next year and we need to be able to transport bikes. With the concerns regarding diesel, we would like a petrol vehicle. What would you suggest? We have looked at the Volkswagen Transporter and Renault Trafic but what are the petrol options?

The answer to your petrol or diesel dilemma will very much depend on your daily driving habits. Diesel's still the best option for regular long trips of 20 miles or more in a large van, while petrol is better for those who do lots of short urban journeys.

The latest Renault Trafic is not offered with a petrol engine. But you can get the Volkswagen Transporter with a 2.0 TSI. Obviously fuel economy is poorer with a petrol, with average economy being in the low 30s, compared to the diesels that average in the low 40s.
