Scirocco misfire

Got a new Scirocco 2.0 TSI - bought August '09 ('09) plate as an ex-demo from a VW dealer I've used for many years - must've bought 6 or 7 VW's from them. The Scirocco has been regularly serviced and looked after by them and has been great but in Sept had a week with them for Engine Management/misfiring - problems - Exhaust emission light on. 6 weeks later and last week it died on me with similar problems and had to be towed by the RAC - VW assistance to the rescue. I've been told this morning that it's terminal and needs a new engine from VW (under warranty). My question to you is - how (if at all) does this affect the car's value or saleability? I know I'd be cautious of a new-ish car if I knew it had a new engine after 40,000 miles as it would ring alarm bells over the cars previous owner and how it had been driven. Am I within my rights to ask VW for compensation or to even buy the car back from me?

I'd grab a 40,000 mile car with a new engine. Give me a new engine rather than one with 40k miles on it anyday. But what went wrong. I'm hearing of pistons cracking in 1.4TSIs.
