V.W. have lost the plot with the 1.6 TDi 7 speed DSG goes into high gear far too quick !!

A good quality car spoiled by the DSG box continualy changing into gear 7 at the quickest chance.

If you want my advice buy the 2.0tdi DSG its a much better drive & motor all round.
Also use Esso diesel you will find your car will run much better, avoid Texaco diesel its r******.
Shells not too bad but varies too much I have had some r****** shell Diesel as well.
Total diesel not too bad, but I would stick with Esso.

This car is fine in semi-auto mode were as I change gear at the right time I get more MPG doing this & have less problems with the DPF. Recently got 60.5 MPG on long trip of mixed roads with no traffic holdups which is very good. Cannot get more than 55 MPG thou on the motorway on long trips at 65-70 MPH,
In semi-automatic mode (change gear yourself) the DPF only regenerates about once every 3 weeks.
In drive mode (computer does it) its nearly every day !!

V.W. have lost the plot the way the DSG is programed.
Complained to V.W. service manager he said they might bring a DSG update but unlikely as it has been programmed on a lab rolling road indoors & makes the MPG look extra good !!!!
A good car spoiled by lack of common sense by the programmer !! 6 gears would have been enough for this engine.

If you check out V.W. website, click technology then D.S.G. it says 7th gear is ideal for the motorway as an overdrive function, if that's the case why does it select 7th when you are only doing 40 mph.
Also it says the D.S.G. always selects the right gear, !!! Trade descriptions act comes to mind here.
This gearbox is a danger when joining the motorway as you need to quickly get up to motorway speeds but when you are in 7th gear you have got no power !!!
Sport mode has to be selected or the kickdown to get speed up !!

If you drive in sport mode you are lucky to get 40mpg !!!

Vauxhall have been brainwashed as well with their autos changing up too quick.

The one company that has got it right is ford with their powershift autos.
Well done to Ford for having the commonsense.

Done nearly 20,000 miles now no problems with the DSG as was reported by lots of people in China & Europe, it seems 35,000 miles is when it all goes pear shaped.
Sometimes drive take up is juddery and a bit rough thou.

Update 11/12/12 lost drive last week dash lights flashing, cleared when switched off engine then restarted, 20750 miles done now, I think this might be that I went to a drive thro car wash with power jets that spray water underneath as well & lets water in were it should not normally go !!
Only use hand car wash places now !! no more problems. Also drive thro car washes do not do the paint work any good I have noticed would not recommend them at all !!

Will be glad to get rid I believe the Golf 2.0 tdi 6 speed DSG is much better.

I have been driving Automatic cars now for the last 20 years & this 7 speed 1.6tdi DSG is the worst one ever !!!

More info on DSG boxes reported on American forum sites warped twin clutch discs causing vibration. these are now being replaced under warranty, perhaps these clutch disc plates are prone to warping due to dry DSG as the old DSG was bathed in oil !!
Also perhaps if these discs are not replaced total destruction of gearbox follows !!!
New 2013 golf 2.0 TDI DSG has wet clutch with 6 speed DSG, wet in being bathed in oil I presume.
Good news from my passengers in the rear is that body control is very good no roll that you get with the Focus & Astra also more room with much more comfort.
I no longer have this car now thank goodness.
