Golf With Serious Electrical Problems

Bought this vehicle at 18 months old with five thousand miles so have waited until we have lived with the car for some time to be able to give a proper honest fair review.

Positives

MPG can return upwards of 68mpg without trying too hard

Performance, good but need to switch to sport mode to get over turbo lag when you need to pull away from a roundabout or junction, plenty of mid range torque

Comfortable

Relatively Spacious

Handling reasonable but not in the wet with the original Goodyear Tyres

External build quality acceptable for price of vehicle

Negatives

Terrible cockpit and touch screen display operations this has been more than adequately covered by other reviewers

No reversing camera

No washer fluid reservoir indicator!!!

No folding wing mirrors on this model

Space saver spare wheel doesn’t come as standard it’s an optional extra so make sure you’ve got one

Warning triangle doesn’t come as standard this has a slot in the tailgate, if it’s missing you’ll need to buy one

We experienced a phantom seat belt warning light on front passenger seat telling us that the seat belt needed to be fastened only problem was there was no one sitting in the seat this went on for months and VW couldn’t fix it

Factory recall for software, we eventually got the car booked in with a courtesy car after VW cancelling our appointments twice at the last minute due to courtesy car shortages

A week after dropping off fthe vehicle for the software update we were told the vehicle wasn’t driveable and needed a new electronic component. Three weeks later still waiting for the parts to be delivered from Ukraine / Russia so might get our car back eventually we’ve gone through three courtesy cars in this time, first one a manual golf had to be returned as the dealership had sold it, the second a brand new petrol Polo broke down twice with electrical faults this was replaced by an electric Up (while the AA via VW Assistance were called out twice) with a range of 120 miles on full charge

This would indicate that electrical / software problems are prevalent throughout the range with parts no longer being manufactured in Germany adding to the reliability problems

Our experience with our local VW dealership has been horrendous, customer care is non existent the story is too long to be told here.

In short in our opinion VW don’t deserve a reputation for building quality reliable cars that reputation belongs in the past. The cars are expensive and overrated in today’s competitive market and lack features that are otherwise standard on other brands.

Don’t buy a VW
