Our cars were moved by a fairground operator - what are the legal implications?

Some friends and I left our cars for a day parked in marked bays in a local village square. There were no limitations on time. On our return at 4pm we found a fairground had set up in the interim, and our cars had been moved to the other side of the square, a maximum of 30 yards. The fairground operatives claimed they hadn't touched the cars and the police must have done it. The cars didn't appear damaged, just moved (we checked carefully). I wonder what the legal implications would have been, should any damage have been found? Could they have jacked them up on trolley jacks, and just pulled them out of the way?

There's no case to answer unless there is damage and you can prove it.
