What are three-cylinder engines like?

I have a Peugeot 307 SW 2006 which is a great car but I have the usual problems with the DPF. I can live with them...

I have been told that a lot of new cars are fitted with 3 cylinder engines and that particularly with a diesel the expense of rectifying DPF/exhaust/manifold etc problems should they arise will be mind boggling. Any comments please?

More 3 cylinder petrol engines than diesel engines at the moment, but MNIN is about to introduce modular 1.5 3 cylinder and 2.0 litre 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines.

For drivers who do less than 15,000 - 20,000 miles a year small petrol turbo is generally better than turbo diesel. The main problems with diesels are failing dual mass flywheels and failing diesel particulate filters, though some diesel engine manufacturers such as Mazda, Renault and Honda seem to get it right and the new 1.6CDTI from GM is very promising.

Makes sense of the 307. Up to seven forward-facing seats. Good to drive. Decent diesels.
