replacing a much loved Land Rover Discovery

Sadly, we feel we may have to replace our 55 reg (bought new Feb 2006) Discovery 3 due to increasing repair bills. My husband feels we ought to economise and although I would love to have another Discovery we are also concerned about reliability issues.

We are struggling to find and agree on an alternative, what would you recommend? Secondly, can we manage with a crossover type (2WD) with winter tyres? We live 700 feet up a hill with 3 kids in the Highlands of Scotland. Our Disco has had it's moments but nothing major until recently. It has been superb in every sense & am dreading losing it.
