Faulty engine on the car I bought

1.5 weeks ago, I bought a car. Mechanic friend checked it prior to buying, did a test drive - it seemed fine. Five days later, on a motorway, I started hearing knocking noise, stopped, and after could not start the car.

An RAC mechanic managed to start the car, but said the engine was gone. Another mechanic said the same. He also checked the papers and found invoices worth £1000 or more for parts, one of which was timing chain. He thought that someone who fitted it might have done it wrong which resulted the engine failure.

The seller refused to take the car back (saying it was fine) or to give contact details of her mechanic (saying it was a friend and fitted the parts as a favor). Is there anything I can do to have my money back? The mileage is 99K, and drove less than 100mi with the car.

If you bought it privately, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do.
