Use of car valuations?

Now there is ready access to numerous online car valuation websites (mainly aimed at buying cars), is there a rule-of-thumb to help check selling prices? I have seen a 12-plated Renault Espace 2.0dCi 150 Dynamique Tom Tom 5 door for sale at a registered Renault dealer for £16,000 but valuation websites suggest a range of only £9,500 - £11,000. I assume these lower figures are cash/ trade-in values and the retailer needs to make a margin, but what is a reasonable add-on (and specifically, what should be my target price be for the Espace)?
