Starter for teen

We are looking for a small 'starter' car for my daughter, 18 years old, but to be used by us occasionally as well, so we want something in good nick. My wife and two daughters are smitten with the 'trendy' Fiat 500; which I have to admit is a good-looking car.

However, because it is so trendy, used prices are firm and at circa £7,000 for a two-year-old basic POP model. I'm sure there must more deserving, but less trendy, care out there that offer better value for money in terms of performance, etc. What other suggestions might you be able to offer for around the £6,000-£7,000 price mark?

Brand new Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic recently on offer at £6,995. Very good indeed, but just not as cute as a 500.
