Is a cheap Golf worth it?

I would like to buy a Golf, however my budget is very limited at £2000.

All that seems available for this price is a late 1990s model with reasonable mileage, or an early 2000 model with 100k+ mileage. First of all, is it worth investing and secondly, which would be the better investment?

Infact, is it worth it at all? Or should I be looking at an entirely different car on this small of a budget? (Need a car for mainly city and occasional motorway driving. 5 door as 2 young kids)

Don't believe the myth about Golfs, especially £2k Golfs.
