Octave lower

For the past four years we have been running an Octavia Estate fitted with the 115 bhp diesel and it goes very well. We find it a much more practical vehicle than the Passat we ran for 11 years and covered 250,000 miles plus. We like the Octavia as it is one of the few estate cars in which you can store suit case upright and use the load cover. Over 40 years ago I very badly hurt my left knee and we now think it is time to consider changing to an automatic. We wonder if we would find the 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp DSG a little underpowered, the other engine we have been considering is the 1.4 TSI 122bhp DSG but we know nothing about how this engine performs. If one goes to the 2.0 TDI PD 140bhp all the costs seem to rise considerably. Can you give us any advice or should we look at a different vehicle completely? We do about 10,000 miles a year. Please advise.

The 1.9 is an old engine, going out of production in favour of a new 1.6 diesel. The 1.4TSI is a new chain cam engine with the benefit of a water-cooled turbo. Very sound engineering, and better to drive at low revs than a diesel. If you can get one, go for that, but the 1.4 TSI 122 and especially fitted with the 7 speed DSG seems to be in short supply. You'll need to buy a spare wheel or a space-saver. Octavias no longer come with them. Spacesaver spares complete with jacking kit from www.skospares.com or www.theskodashop.co.uk
