Don’t drop your plate

We have just ordered a Hyundai i10 on the scrappage scheme. We have a cherished registration on the part-ex car. We have been told by the dealer that the plate has to go on retention until the new car arrives. Is this correct?

Sensible dealer. That is by far the best idea, especially since there might be a delay between the scrapping and you getting the new car. Put the plate onto a retention certificate and get an age related plate for your car. Then, after your new car is registered and you have had it for a week or two, swap the reg from the retention certificate to the new car. Downloadable forms and more info at www.dvla.gov.uk
