  • Changing my car 24 Jun 2013 (Forum)
I have had my 04 Fabia 1.2 comfort for 6 trouble free years now, and have just retired and fancy getting something a little newer, another Fabia is prbably the best option but i do fancy somrthing different, looking at maybe Polo, Jazz, or Focus. Not to sure if i need a diesel or not, as long as its similar in fuel consumpton to my present car it should be ok. Lots of the hondas i look at have i shift, is this any good or is it trouble. Any advice or suggestions on suitable cars appreciated, i plan to keep the car for at least 6 years again.
  • Mk2 Mondeo estate, 1.8 Endura.de TD - Shell V-Power vs Fuelsave re MOT emmissions test 18 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hello! Would anyone have any info or ideas concerning which of the above two Shell diesel fuels would actually produce the least (lowest) emmissions in the context of a MOT emmissions test?   I rang up the technical dept of the Shell customer care 0800 line twice and both times they told me that V-Power and Fuelsave produce exactly the same (low) levels of emmissions.
  • Passat AVB 101bhp pd - Passat AVB poor mpg 8 Feb 2013 (Forum)
The problem is my mpg seems to low, the car has had the timing belt & water pump done-egr replaced with a new one-lower boost hoses replaced- liqi Molly diesel purge as well as using it in full tank of fuel. I've done mixed driving 50% motorway A roads and around locally, full tank done just over 400 miles and I'm not driving crazy :-( The car has done 138k with two previous owners, should I get a remap to see if it helps with the mpg etc ?

Should I use a flushing additive before draining and if so, which one? Thinking of using Millers XFE diesel 10/40 oil. Also when should the fuel filter and air filter be replaced? Many thanks, Martin
  • SAAB 9-3 Convertible - Loss of power at lower revs 24 May 2012 (Forum)
Hi, My diesel saab 9.3 1.9 loses power at lower revs (<2,500)  All's well when the turbo engages until I change up a gear. The independent garage says they've checked all the obvious things and that the diagnostics and emissions are OK.
  • Citroen c3 1.4hdi - Poor starting 16 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Pulls away ok. If you restart the engine while warm is starts no problem. I have checked the low pressure fuel pipes, replaced the spill pipes and injector clips. It looks like I am getting air in to the diesel or it waits until it has built up pressure before it will start. Any advice would be great.
  • Which do you like 20 Jul 2011 (Forum)
My headache is coming on again. There are just so many excellent cars these days. Needs are reliability, frugal fuel, prefer diesel, largest luggage capacity possible  (given overall size--estates are OK) safety, comfort. HELP Please. And thank you.
  • any - Real MPG on HJ website 5 May 2011 (Forum)
Saw with interest the new part of HJ website about real fuel consumption. Average on a recent 1400 mile touring trip to france and belgium in an Epica 2.0 turbo diesel with 3 on board plus all our bagage was (I thought) an excellent 42mpg. drove at motorway speeds up to a true 85mph where allowed on motorways, so very pleasantly surprised. here in old blighty can generally get 45mpg by sticking to true 70mph on our motorways, that is close to what chevrolet claim, so not too bad for a large heavy car.

When i try to start it, it just turns over but then tries to fire but just wont catch. i have had the rac to with diagnostics and it came up with camshaft position fault at bank 1 or single sensor error code P0340 & P1222 they told me the injector pump was the fault so i have had that checked and everything is ok with it.i have also had new leakoff pipes on.

Could be facing a large bill on my car of £1000 or a bit more, and may be further repairs and therefore are considering whether to replace car. Car is a focus sized saloon car, has a diesel engine which produces just over 150BHP and has 147,000 miles on clock, is elven years old and averages 47 mpg, and covers 11,000 miles a year If replacing it I would like to have something of the same size ,power, and fuel costs.

  • Legacy or Passat - Estate car buying advice please - Subaru or VW? 11 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Typcal journeys weekly are short but then every couple of months there is a 500 mile round trip (no trailer) to consider, good fuel economy is therefore key for us. With a budget of up to £16/17k or thereabouts, we've narrowed it down to a Subaru Legacy Spouterourer (2.0 diesel - probably the 2008 model) or a Passat Estate (again, 2.0 tdi 170 PS) any thoughts/considerations/experience from you would be gratefully received.

My son has a P100 pick up with a 1.8 diesel engine (I've listed it as an escort as there's no P100 listing) but its the same engine, in fact it came from an escort (not an easy conversion) It starts and drives well, but on tickover when hot starts running unevenly and smoking unburnt fuel although its perfectly OK given a few revs.

  • New Mondeo -- "feed forward" torque?? 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
In the A*t*c*r road test of the estate, they comment on something called "feed forward" torque: "The 2.0-litre diesel has a re-mapped fuel system that helps pulling away from the line smoothly. Called ?feed forward?, it provides a pre-emptive boost of torque to the engine before setting off, and seems to work well."
  • Ideas for a functional estate circa £2k 25 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi All, My Dad's Pug 405 1.9TD estate is giving up the ghost and starting to burn more engine oil than fuel. So the hunt is on for a suitable replacement. Being a pensioner his budget is limited to circa £2k and I'm looking for something that is 'functional' - i.e. not bothered about colour, styling or extras.
