Mondeo TD (Endura DE) oil recommendation 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Not only does the grade ring alarm bells on such an old design, low tech engine, but I was always led to believe that one should use a dedicated diesel oil in diesel engines because the added detergents perform such an important job. I don't wish to argue with the manufacturer, but I just wondered what you would do on a 117,000 mile car that is now WELL out of warranty? Would you stick with the 10W/40, or would you switch back to the 5W/30? -
Replacing wheel cylinder (all vehicles) 2 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Do we know this by trying it (How? That's never done...) or do we just think it probably will? Just as important, would it affect the brake balance (MOT testable), having one new one and one old one? Then the shoes. Of course on one side they've been covered with brake fluid. I will clean up the drum with brake cleaner (and garages have done this for me with previous cars so I presume it's standard practice). -
Toyota Hi-Lux, anyone? 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I wonder if anyone out there has a view on this? HJ gives it a mention but suggests it's only specially imported into UK, maybe that's changed. http://www.toyota.com.ph/showroom/hilux/index.html This truck reminded me of the Ford F150 I had, and I've been looking at it for some weeks now. Test drive Monday I hope. -
The Popularity of LPG Conversions 23 Oct 2005 (Forum)
If however, I keep it longer than 2 years, I'd start to make money on the conversion. Finally, probably the most important question, I currently have a good and reliable vehicle that I enjoy immensely, would I perhaps be jeopardising that by doing an LPG conversion? (Even with the most professional of installs, you sometimes still do hear of various issues). -
what estate for show dogs? 16 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Oh, I do rather like to run my cars until they eventually grind to a halt, rather than sell 'em, so high mileage capability is pretty important. Besides I prefer to buy a car that's only a few years old, but has higher than average mileage. Thank you all so much for looking at this. -
Audi 80 Cabriolet 2.6e - A few problems! 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I bought this car at the weekend with a few known problems with it - if anyone has any ideas I would be hugely grateful for any advice: 1) MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEM: Passenger window does not operate at all - it did very weakly at first and now not at all, not even a noise or voltage drop acroos the system. I have checked the switches and they're fine and there doesn't appear to be a fuse for the window. -
Thinking of buying a Y reg Corsa 11 Feb 2005 (Forum)
So to the 2001 Corsa 1.2i which we saw last night in a local independant dealer, for £3,695. Seems pretty perfect for her, has the all-important PAS, and a CD-player which she was very much hoping for. She likes the look of the car, and the colour. Am due to have the salesman round to look at the Alfa on Saturday morning, hopefully to offer a respectable amount in return. -
Sheared tube but what is it? Astra 1.7TD 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
When I rubbed my (gloved) hand on either the connector or the cut end of the tube I got oil all over my gloves, but it's far from flowing out. My questions - first off what is this tube and how important is is? Should I worry about driving with it in this state? It must be remembered here that I don't know when this happened and the car is running fine. The haynes manual mentions a tube to a vacuum switch, but doesn't say what this switch is for or where to find it - could that be this tube? -
Motoring documents 11 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Sounds like common sense but a mislaid insurance cert will cause you problems/hassle should you get a "producer". 2. Send all important docs (such as returned NIPs) by recorded delivery. Failure to return these forms could lead to prosecution, what happens when they "lose" the form that you sent back? 3. If declaring a sorn, go to post office where you can get a reciept. -
Lack of signs to A& E hospitals 12 Dec 2003 (Forum)
With the centralising of A&E departments to large specialist hospitals, to my mind, it is even more important to have good directional signs to these sites. Everybody including emergency services are having to travel further with patients to such facilities. Surely it is essential that proper standard directional signs are deployed in the most appropriate places. -
More like this please 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
"The emphasis is to focus on the vehicles that may have done something wrong so we don't disrupt ordinary law abiding motorists," he said. "We are looking for crime and we have made quite important arrests. We are trying to fight crime, we are not trying to pick on the motorist." Tim Stead of the Magistrates Court Service, said the operation enabled them to tie up a great number of outstanding fines. -
Thermo-viscous Fan operation - Carlton 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
There are no ‘Normal’, ‘Hot’ or other indicators on the gauge. Is the correct operation of this fan vitally important? Thanks for any advice. Regards to all Bob -
Boredom relief shortlist 13 May 2003 (Forum)
It must respond eagerly to my right foot in any gear, and have the braking and cornering to match; performance is more important than luxury spec. Image is not a major concern. At the moment, I'm finding it hard to look beyond the basic new-shape Impreza WRX from one of the supermarkets for about £17k, which can later be upgraded via the £1600 Prodrive Performance Pack to near-STI levels of performance without the tacky stickers, wing spoilers and air-scoops. -
Baby seats - FAO Mark (RLBS) 18 Feb 2003 (Forum)
"Youngsters are at greater risk of severe injury or death when they're involved in a crash while riding in the front seat," Dr Jeffrey Runge, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said at a news conference this week. "It is vitally important that all parents secure their children in the back seat. The back is always the safest place for kids to ride." Safety regulators advised that placing children in the back seat could reduce the risk of serious injury or death during an accident by nearly 40 per cent. -

My renault clio (3days old) has an annoying clicking sound (it isn't very noisy but still)I want someone to look at it incase it is something important when I phoned Renault to get someone to look at it they said the technicians only work till 4.30. E explaining that I need the car for work which is how a 20 year old buy a £10k car and that I would want a coutisy car for the day as I was unwilling to take a holiday (one of the few that I get) to deal with the problem I was abruptly told that I needn? -
Do I need a new car? 15 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Some people consider all thoughts of image pure vanity, but when you are talking about a business tool, in my experience, if you?re traveling to visit customers, particularly new customers, the car you arrive in is as important as your dress code and the quality of your stationery. They all send messages about what sort of a business you are. The difficult bit is discerning what sort of image you really need. Who are those customers and target customers? -
Oil Specifications 21 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The CCMC specs have been replaced by the ACEA specs which are harder for oil companies to achieve. As engine oils are being developed and improved all the time it is important to check what the latest recommendation is for your vehicle as the details in the handbook may be out of date. One last point I DO NOTwork for an oil company! API (American Petroleum Institute) Classifications: Gasoline Performance SA Obsolete SB Obsolete ? -
Oil labelling explained 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
MB229.3, VW503.00, BMW LL01 etc) Ignore the marketing blurb on the label it is in many cases meaningless and I will explain later what statements you should treat this with some scepticism So, what does the above information mean and why is it important? THE BASICS All oils are intended for an application and in general are not interchangeable. You would not for example put an Automatic Transmission Oil or a Gear Oil in your engine! It is important to know what the oils intended purpose is. -
A Challenge to Essex Police 21 Apr 2002 (Forum)
2/ "And there is strong evidence to show that safety cameras - designed to keep motorists to the speed limit - made an important contribution to saving life and limb." Is this not an even more extraordinary statement, given that deaths rose by 42%? 3/ "A combination of these deaths (full year) and injuries (to end of November) gives a current total casualty toll of 8,108 for 2001 - a decrease of eight per cent on the same periods for 2000."
