And the rear floor was cut to take the V8 and the unit was reworked to 4999c, which gave an estimated power output of 435bhp… in a Transit that weighed about 1.5 tons.   .  From launch there will be seven engines – three petrol and four diesels, with the most cost effective powertrain being the 150PS 2.0-litre TDI Ultra that will return an impressive 74.3mpg and emit 99g/km of CO2.  For performance seekers, there will also be S badged models, with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 354PS and 500Nm of torque, equating to a 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. However, as you might expect, S4 models won't return anywhere near the headline economy figures, with fuel economy at a claimed 38.2mpg and emissions at 170g/km of CO2.  Standard equipment has been improved across the range, with three-zone climate control, Audi Drive Select, 17-inch alloy wheels and a seven-inch infotainment system with full smartphone compatibility.

  Top seller on the day was a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 (above), which sold for well above its upper estimate, fetching £373,750. Meanwhile a 1958 Jaguar XK 150 ‘S’ Roadster with a fascinating history and just 580 miles on the clock, sold for an amazing £201,250, one of the highest prices ever paid anywhere in the world for a car of its type. Other notable lots finding new homes included a rare 2005 Honda NSX Targa which sold for £80,500, a true piece of British automotive history – the ‘ Longbridge Tunnel’ Mini Clubman, which sold for £1610, and a beautiful 1967 Ford Lotus Cortina MkI fetching £38,525 – more than double its pre-sale estimate.

  Giugiaro was careful to ensure that it featured prominent ‘haunches’, a design signature that was consistent on all post-war Jaguars, barring the XJ-S. Inside, too, there was enough wood and leather to satisfy the most plutocratic owner/driver, but it was presented in a much more contemporary style. Of course, the quad-headlamps were dropped, and that would have been controversial back in the 1990s – but again, as the XF and XJ have proved, it’s possible for a Jaguar to do without this feature.
