Setting the speed at 10 miles over the speed limit, he kept his hands off the wheel for extended periods of time, ignoring automated warnings not to do so. Neither the driver nor the car detected a truck moving into their lane.

  In a nut, the plan was to shove as much of a GT40 as possible into a transit. A tubular spaceframe was bolted in take most of a GT40’s running gear. And the rear floor was cut to take the V8 and the unit was reworked to 4999c, which gave an estimated power output of 435bhp… in a Transit that weighed about 1.5 tons. With all that grunt, some serious work was needed to make sure it could get around bends and stop.

In 2004, Coys sold it at its Monaco auction to the current vendor, who used it sparingly for a variety of events.   Other collectors’ cars that went under the hammer include two Porsche 356 Pre A, a 1955 cabriolet that sold for €260,600 (£234,438) and a 1953 1500 S coupe for €283,000 (£254,595) to the same buyer, a 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia for €170,000 (£152,937), a 1954 Corvette C1 for over €70,000 (£62,971) and a 1990 Lamborghini Countach Anniversary with less than 400 miles on the clock for €367,000 (£330,152).

  .  From launch there will be seven engines – three petrol and four diesels, with the most cost effective powertrain being the 150PS 2.0-litre TDI Ultra that will return an impressive 74.3mpg and emit 99g/km of CO2.  For performance seekers, there will also be S badged models, with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 354PS and 500Nm of torque, equating to a 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. However, as you might expect, S4 models won't return anywhere near the headline economy figures, with fuel economy at a claimed 38.2mpg and emissions at 170g/km of CO2.  Standard equipment has been improved across the range, with three-zone climate control, Audi Drive Select, 17-inch alloy wheels and a seven-inch infotainment system with full smartphone compatibility.
